Funino - why and for what?

New forms of play in children's football will be mandatory from 2024.

The DFB Federal Youth Day voted unanimously in favor of the binding implementation of the new forms of play in children's football. The regulation is scheduled to come into force nationwide at the beginning of the 2024/2025 season. From this point on, the changed forms of play, which essentially provide for smaller team sizes on smaller playing fields, will replace the previous competition offers in the G, F and E youth as fixed formats. The official decision on this will be made by the DFB Bundestag in 2022 on March 11th.

The DFB Federal Youth Day followed the recommendation of the Youth Committee and the Committee for Women's and Girls' Football. This was preceded by a two-year pilot phase in which all 21 regional associations and numerous football districts and clubs took part. The nationwide rollout of the game forms will now take place in stages before the new regulations take effect throughout Germany from summer 2024.

Promote sustainable enjoyment of football

In the G-Youth, the game is played in two-on-two or three-on-three formats with four mini-goals. In the F-Youth team, three-on-three is also recommended; alternatively, four-on-four or five-on-five is also possible. In the E-youth there is a permanent transition to five-on-five up to a maximum of seven-on-seven; in this age group there is also a gradual transition to the use of small-field goals and goalkeepers.

In order to minimize the pressure to perform and to place greater emphasis on the children's sporting development, there will be no championship round in the G and F youth divisions. Instead, game afternoons and festivals with several teams and playing fields are planned.

A rotation principle with fixed changes of players is integrated into the game format in order to enable all children to play. The most important goal of the reform in the U 6 to U 11 age groups is to sustainably promote fun in the game with a child-friendly type of football. The players are given more actions and personal experiences of success.
