From the youth player to the referee legend

"I had the better talent than referee"

Frank Smith was connected to sport at a young age. Handball and football were particularly taken with it. But it quickly became clear to him:

"My talent was better off in the work of the referee."

At the age of only 15 he decided on the referee career - a brave and future -oriented step. Until 1992 he was also active in football before devoting himself entirely to handball.

Career at an international level

Frank looks back on his career with pride and modesty:

"I was best able to develop my skills as a referee and stay on the ball even with higher leagues."

The highlights were Champions League inserts in handball-for example in Kiel and especially in Barcelona.

Sports as an appointment and profession

"Handball has always been my hobby and I was able to do it with the association."

Frank is still a sought -after expert - not just in the field:

"The frequent confrontation through the questions always gives me an overview of the changes and news in sport."

Travel, experiences, joie de vivre

"The trips that were necessary for the games were the highlights for me."

The games led him across Europe, with experiences, stories and memories that extend far beyond the game.

"I could see things that I would never have experienced otherwise."
