"You don't have what it takes to be a referee" - and it all started
Sometimes a big career begins with a single sentence. With Wolfgang Adam it was a provocative comment from his then math teacher on the referee performance: "I couldn't leave that." The ambition was awakened - and in the same year he completed his first course.
What started as a small revenge quickly became a passion. A friendship developed from the initial discussion - his teacher later became his mentor.
From the district class to the Bundesliga
After two years, Wolfgang Adam led games in the B-Class, soon afterwards in the A-Class. He had arrived in the district league five years after his entry. This was followed by the association league (1978) and the Oberliga (1986) before it was used in the professional leagues from 1990 to 1992.
"The time in the Bundesliga was particularly impressive - there I was able to lead games together with well -known colleagues such as Anton Matheis and Markus Merk."
St. Pauli, Nuremberg and the art of concentration
When asked about his most formative experiences, Wolfgang Adam finds the answer difficult - he experienced too many unforgettable moments.
"At first I want to say that every game, both in the 1st and the 2nd league - was an experience that demanded absolute concentration and preparation."
The games at FC St. Pauli and Nuremberg are particularly impressive: stadium, atmosphere, audience "that was something special".

Recognition that remains
Despite all the challenges, it is primarily an aspect that has always motivated him:
"To get the recognition from those present for what you have done."
Time, money, energy - all of this requires referee. In addition, there are courses, meetings and finally the game itself. Nevertheless, Wolfgang Adam is clear:
"Of course, this cannot be weighed up with the payment. But the feedback from everyone else who experiences it makes up. Praise is always good."
B+D - Reliable suppliers for decades
Wolfgang Adam came with me early B+D all -purpose In contact: "In the past, a lot ran through bulk orders. We picked up everything with several cars, paid in cash and brought it to the referee association." A strong contrast to today's digital processing.
A look into the future: preparation is everything
What does Wolfgang Adam want for the coming generations in refereeing? His answer is clear:
"Preparation is the be -all and end -all - be it possible knowledge, fitness or knowledge of the teams and the space."
Finally: tips from a real professional
- Recognize the true leader on the field (not always the captain)- address with first and last names for better communication.
- Research on the teams: results, table level, player mentality and regional factors (e.g. derby).
- Safe control and physical fitness are indispensable.
